Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Physical Substation Engineer to support and lead engineering activities for substation and transmission projects. This senior-level role involves overseeing the design, review, and maintenance of physical substations and switchyards , collaborating with internal teams and external contractors, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Ideal candidates will have a strong engineering background, extensive hands-on experience, and a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of substation engineering, including structural analysis, grounding design, and AC/DC calculations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in capital project engineering activities, including developing RFPs, and selecting/managing third-party vendors and contractors.
  • Structural analysis, grounding design, and AC/DC calculations.
  • Review and recommend detailed engineering bid packages for approval.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage engineering standards in collaboration with operations, planning, and project management teams.
  • Assist in developing equipment ratings and guidelines to ensure proper operation and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance for ongoing new projects, and construction activities.
  • Contribute to annual budget planning and maintain accurate contract records.
  • Manage engineering databases and a drawing management file system.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil or Electrical preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electric transmission or distribution engineering with a focus on physical substation design.
  • Knowledge of transmission protection, control engineering, and/or line engineering.
  • Familiarity with FERC regulations, RTO planning processes, and NERC compliance.
  • Experience with transmission planning and project management software.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, GIS tools, Aspen, and spreadsheet/reporting software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel frequently to project sites.

$120-$170k
